01 / WHAT IS INVESTMENT CASTING?

A wax pattern becomes a ceramic-shell mold.

Investment Casting uses a wax pattern to reproduce the required part geometry. Multiple patterns are assembled as a wax tree, then surrounded by a ceramic shell built through repeated coating and drying cycles.

Once the wax is removed, the shell retains a cavity. Molten metal is poured into that cavity; after solidification, the shell is removed and the individual castings continue to cut-off, finishing and inspection.

WHY “LOST WAX”?

“Investment Casting” and “Lost Wax Casting” describe the same core principle: wax defines the geometry, is removed from the shell, and leaves the cavity that metal later fills.

03 / PROCESS STAGES IN DETAIL

See what each stage needs to hand over to the next.

01 / STAGE

Wax Pattern Injection

Form wax patterns that reproduce the required part geometry.

What happens

Wax is conditioned and injected into the pattern die or tooling route selected for the part. The resulting wax pattern becomes the geometric starting point for the later shell and metal casting.

Why it matters

The pattern establishes the form that every following operation will reproduce. Its handling, condition and repeatability should be visible before assembly.

Key process controls
  • Pattern geometry and visual condition
  • Wax conditioning consistency
  • Cooling and handling route
Typical equipment
  • Wax Injection Machine
  • Wax Melting / Conditioning Unit
  • Pattern Die / Tooling
Related process resource

02 / STAGE

Wax Pattern Inspection

Review the wax pattern before it is made part of a larger assembly.

What happens

Patterns are checked for visual condition, deformation, dimensions and surface condition according to the agreed part requirements.

Why it matters

An issue in the wax stage may carry through the ceramic shell and final casting. Checking before assembly keeps the source easier to identify.

Key process controls
  • Visual condition
  • Pattern deformation
  • Dimensions and surface condition
Typical equipment
  • Inspection Workstation
  • Pattern Gauging Tools
  • Handling Fixtures

03 / STAGE

Wax Tree Assembly

Connect multiple wax patterns to the sprue system as a wax tree.

What happens

Prepared patterns are joined through gates to a central sprue, creating the wax tree that will later define the cavity and metal flow arrangement.

Why it matters

Assembly quality influences how patterns are supported, coated and filled. Gate locations, tree handling and joint condition need a clear review.

Key process controls
  • Gate and sprue connection quality
  • Tree orientation
  • Assembly and handling stability
Typical equipment
  • Wax Welding / Assembly Station
  • Sprue Assembly Fixture
  • Tree Handling System
Related process resource

04 / STAGE

Ceramic Shell Building

Build the refractory shell around the wax tree through repeated coating cycles.

What happens

The wax tree moves through slurry dipping, draining, stucco application and drying. The sequence is repeated as required by the process route.

Why it matters

The shell becomes the mold that contains molten metal. Shell build, surface coverage, layer condition and handling must work together.

Key process controls
  • Slurry condition
  • Dip, drain and stucco coverage
  • Shell handling between cycles
Typical equipment
  • Slurry Tank
  • Dipping System
  • Rain Sander / Fluidized Bed
  • Slurry Mixing / Control System

05 / STAGE

Shell Drying

Condition each shell layer and the completed shell before wax removal.

What happens

The coated tree is held in a controlled drying environment between shell-building cycles and before the following thermal stages.

Why it matters

Drying is a process stage, not only a waiting period. Consistent air movement, handling and environmental conditions support shell readiness.

Key process controls
  • Between-coat drying condition
  • Final shell readiness
  • Air movement and handling
Typical equipment
  • Drying Room
  • Air Handling System
  • Temperature / Humidity Control

06 / STAGE

Dewax

Remove the main wax content from the ceramic shell to create the cavity.

What happens

The ceramic shell enters a dewax operation that removes the main wax pattern material while retaining the shell around the geometry.

Why it matters

Dewax makes the mold cavity possible. It must be discussed separately from the later burnout and preheating stage.

Key process controls
  • Shell handling into dewax
  • Wax removal route
  • Wax recovery interface
Typical equipment
  • Steam Dewax Autoclave
  • Wax Recovery System
Related process resource

07 / STAGE

Burnout & Mold Preheating

Prepare the dewaxed ceramic shell for the selected pouring route.

What happens

After dewax, the shell is processed through burnout and preheating to address remaining material and prepare the ceramic mold for pouring.

Why it matters

This thermal stage is distinct from dewax. Shell condition, furnace handling and the handoff to pouring should be considered together.

Key process controls
  • Shell condition after dewax
  • Furnace handling
  • Pre-pour shell readiness
Typical equipment
  • Burnout Furnace
  • Shell Preheating Furnace

08 / STAGE

Metal Melting & Pouring

Fill the prepared ceramic shell cavity with the selected molten metal.

What happens

Metal is prepared and poured into the shell cavity using the melting and pouring arrangement selected around the material, part and process requirements.

Why it matters

Pouring connects the metal, shell and cavity conditions. The suitable furnace and pouring method are project-specific rather than assumed as one standard route.

Key process controls
  • Metal preparation and handling
  • Pouring sequence
  • Shell and mold handoff
Typical equipment
  • Melting Furnace
  • Crucible / Ladle
  • Pouring Station

09 / STAGE

Shell Knockout & Cut-Off

Remove the ceramic shell and separate individual castings from the tree.

What happens

After solidification and cooling, the shell is removed and individual castings are cut from the sprue and gate system for downstream work.

Why it matters

The separation route connects the finished casting tree to cleaning, finishing and inspection. Handling should protect the part through this transition.

Key process controls
  • Shell removal route
  • Casting separation
  • Part handling after cut-off
Typical equipment
  • Knockout Equipment
  • Mechanical / Water Cleaning
  • Cut-Off Machine
Related process resource

10 / STAGE

Cleaning, Finishing & Inspection

Prepare the separated casting for the agreed inspection and next operation.

What happens

Castings move through cleaning, finishing and inspection steps defined by the part and project requirements before their delivery handoff.

Why it matters

This stage makes the link between the casting result, required condition and customer documentation visible.

Key process controls
  • Surface and excess material condition
  • Required inspection points
  • Packing and documentation handoff
Typical equipment
  • Grinding Equipment
  • Shot Blasting / Cleaning
